Bid for £44m to end gyratory misery for drivers
A MULTI-million pound bid for government cash could transform Old Street, Drayton Park, Archway and Highbury Corner. Islington Council will today (Friday) ask for £44million from the Department of Transport’s community infrastructure fund to be spent on four massive projects, three of which will see the end of troublesome roundabouts.
The fourth project, which will receive £12million if the application is successful, will be a total revamp of Drayton Park station, giving it new platforms and better disability access.
Plans to end the gyratory traffic system at Highbury Corner, which have already gone out to consultation, would cost £13.5million, while a similar scheme in Archway would need £11million funding.
Lib Dem councillor Meral Ece, who announced plans for the bid, said: “This is really positive. A lot of Islington’s infrastructure needs to be revamped. It will improve the quality of life for people in Islington. “We need to remove Archway’s gyratory system, Highbury Corner has been long overdue and we need to upgrade Drayton Park to improve transport links with Arsenal. “We’re doing it in a systematic way and we’re doing it in full consultation with the public. This is all in response to people telling us what they want.”
The Town Hall will have to wait until July to hear if it has successfully reached the next stage in the bidding process.
