Great show of solidarity
• ON behalf of myself and my fellow directors, I would like to thank all leaseholders who attended the first meeting of the Islington Leaseholders’ Association in the main chamber of Islington Town Hall.
I have received numerous emails and phone calls from leaseholders wishing to express their gratitude to the board of directors of the embryonic Islington Leaseholders’ Association for providing such a positive showing of leaseholder solidarity.
It did, in fact, exceed the expectations of even the directors who, having planned for an attendance in the region of 100, were delighted when, having filled the main council chamber beyond its legal capacity, they had to resort to diverting attendees into the spectators’ gallery and then the aisles.
In total, we counted in excess of 250 individuals (many of whom represented their local leaseholders’ associations so, in reality, brought the gathering closer to a four-figure assemblage) and those late arrivals who could not be accommodated had to wait outside for a vacant space or leave disappointed.
However, on the subject of finance, leaseholders who attended the meeting voted unanimously to pay subscriptions on a voluntary basis and, furthermore, suggested that, since they required a soundly financed association to represent them, perhaps 40p a week was not adequate and they would be happy to pay more.
So, all in all, a great success, which we are now confident that, with our members’ continued support, we can constantly repeat.
