Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 1 May 2008

Legacy of sell-offs

•“YOU reap what you sow” is a famous saying and now we see where the Lib Dem council’s sell-off policy has led the community sector of this borough. Had the council not sold the Islington Chinese Association building three or four years back, the association would not now be facing the threat of eviction (Chinese centre pleads: Help us find new home, April 18). Many other community groups have faced a similar, bleak future due to lack of certainty over their premises.
The association serves a great deal of vulnerable, mainly elderly, people as well as running an excellent meals service for the housebound.
This crucial service will be lost unless the council agrees immediately to rehouse the association. I have written to the chief executive to request that the council assist in resolving the current difficulties at the Giesbach Road site or in finding the association an alternative property.
Councils have a community leadership role to protect and enhance the work done by voluntary organisations. Assisting with premises is the least the council can do to protect this excellent service to Chinese community members.
Cllr Catherine West
Islington Labour Leader
