Forgotten addiction
• FOR many years the health authorities of Camden and Islington shared a primary care trust. This PCT no longer operates conjointly so the funding of the Mind in Camden minor tranquiliser service project is primarily from Camden PCT.
Sadly, the contribution that Islington makes is to be withdrawn after June. Thereafter, clients from Islington will no longer be able to attend the Camden Mind project. Only Camden residents will be eligible.
Addiction to minor tranquilisers is a serious issue, despite the drugs being legal. There are many problems attached to their use. It is not widely appreciated that “coming off” a whole range of sleeping and/or anti-anxiety medication needs to be attempted slowly and carefully with medical and specialist support.
I feel concerned that people from Islington who are dependent on benzos will have nowhere to access the care they need.
Has Islington Council taken note of this? Surely, there is some way it can make funds and rooms available for Islingtonians who need the mutual support and guidance of a specialist service for benzodiazepine users.
