Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 23 May 2008

Curbs on bar growth

• LIB Dem councillor Marisha Ray’s memory must be failing her. When she wrote her outburst against Emily Thornberry she must have forgotten her own part in last November’s licensing committee meeting (MP cannot claim credit, May 16) .
The Licensing Act 2003 requires each local authority to draw up its own licensing policy and to review it every three years, which is what happened last November.
The Lib Dems’ original policy was weak and their revised policy did not improve it very much.
With fellow Labour councillor Wally Burgess I proposed changes which made it easier for residents to oppose new bars in an area which is saturated with licensed premises and to oppose strip clubs and the like.
Cllr Ray and other leading Lib Dem councillors voted against the changes but with the help of backbench Lib Dems we got the changes agreed.
It just shows how this Liberal Democrat administration loves to say one thing and then do another. When it comes down to it, it is soft on crime and anti-social behaviour. Islington needs a change.

Labour, Holloway ward
