Victim Wajahat Sheikh
Club killer may never be found
THE killing of a student at a King’s Cross nightclub may never be solved after police admitted they have now closed their file on the case. Wajahat Sheikh, 21, was punched and kicked while breaking up a fight at Scala nightclub during a Ms Dynamite gig in May 2002. He was pronounced dead hours later at University College Hospital in Bloomsbury.
On the sixth anniversary of his death, police confirmed all lines of inquiry have been exhausted and the file is marked “unsolved”.
Key officers who investigated Mr Sheikh’s killing have either moved on or retired.
According to official statements, his file has not been looked at since 2003.
The last notation on police records was the arrest and subsequent release of seven people.
Despite there being more than 500 revellers at the Pentonville Road club on the night of the killing, few witnesses appear to have been traced.
A police spokeswoman said: “All lines of inquiry into the murder of Wajahat Sheikh were pursued with a negative result. The case was closed. If further evidence comes to light it will be investigated.”
His killing bears worrying similarities to the more recent death of Daniel Ross, 22, who was gunned down at Scala nightclub in September, 2006. This week his mother, Jean Ross, spoke of her frustration at the lack of progress in the investigation into her son’s death.
As with Mr Sheikh’s killing, there were hundreds of people in the club when Mr Ross was shot.
Mrs Ross was handed a report by investigating officers last month indicating they could not take the hunt any further without supporting statements from witnesses.
She said: “I want them to find my son’s killers but they say they’ve gone as far as they can go.”
There is an outstanding £10,000 reward offered for information leading to the conviction of Mr Sheikh’s killer. Police have rejected an offer by the Tribune to launch a new appeal over his death.
