Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 13 June 2008

Whopping footprint

• FOR so long people have been immune to local politicians wasting our money as we embraced the world of rising house prices and cheap credit, labour and goods. Now they must respond to the new financial environment we all find ourselves in.
I was disappointed to read of our council leader jetting off to the United States twice last year (Kempton’s cruise, it was jolly hard work, June 6).
Is it really necessary to spend precious money on hotels and to leave a whopping great carbon footprint in order to gain an education that’s clearly available in the UK? Worryingly, Councillor James Kempton seems completely unperturbed by this waste of money and carbon.
It strikes me as politically naïve if those in power feel that public resentment towards their management of our community will remain subdued in a period of economic turbulence.
Our community, along with countless others, is facing its greatest financial crisis since Black Wednesday and our leaders must surely make contingencies on the grounds of prudence to ensure the needs of the community are met. Good for the Tax Payers’ Alliance for speaking up on our behalf.
