Will MPs back Davis?
• AS an Islington resident, I was pleased that both our Labour MPs voted against their Party Whip with the Conservatives to oppose Prime Minister Gordon Brown on the motion proposing 42 days’ detention for terrorist suspects. As a member of a party that takes liberty very strongly, I was also heartened by the Conservative Shadow Home Secretary’s resignation to fight the government in a by-election on this point.
Since David Davis resigned, two Labour rebel MPs, Bob Marshall-Andrews and Ian Gibson, have offered to campaign for him. Will our MPs offer their support to Mr Davis in his by-election? They saw fit to vote against the government on the issue, and I would like to see them support Mr Davis in his campaign against Gordon Brown if they take civil liberties seriously.
