One-way solution
• ON the afternoon of Monday, June 16, there were two car accidents at the Hornsey Road end of Tollington Way in Holloway. They both caused the road to be closed for most of an hour. One of the cars involved was a write-off, if the debris lying about is of any account.
There have been a number of attempts to “calm” traffic in Tollington Way. The latest one is a traffic island with large lumps of metal to deter speeding drivers. The problem with this is that “boy racers” simple ignore the lumps of metal. They are probably not racing their own vehicles in the first place. Why should they care if large bits of them are torn off? Drivers of large vehicles simply drive on the wrong side of the road and across the traffic island.
It is clearly not a reasonable solution, it endangers the lives of pedestrians (there is a primary school nearby) and it must annoy those trying to drive properly. They often have to join a long queue, which can stretch onto Hornsey Road. Rush hour is extremely busy at that junction.
This traffic-calming scheme has not worked. Nor have previous ones in this narrow, busy street. The only solution to this, and other, traffic problems in Tollington Way is surely to make the street one-way.
