Really back to front
• I’M reminded of US architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s dictum when an architectural mistake has been made: “Plant vines!”
I wrote last June that the new Finsbury primary school being built seemed to be back to front and Ken Darby confirmed this when he called for flowering climbers to be planted in Whitecross Street to hide “the grim aspect of the 30ft-high wall” (Wall for a borstal, May 5).
Architecturally, it seems Islington Council is more concerned with the finer feelings of the City’s nearby Barbican residents. Special attention has been paid to the three green roofs so Barbican eyes do not have to be averted. What about the council’s own Whitbread estate residents directly opposite? A “Golden Lane Campus” sign has gone up in Whitecross Street, where it looks incongruous. The sign is not repeated on the Golden Lane side. That’s really back to front! One has to wonder at the sensibilities of the governors and others.
