Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 11 July 2008

Cut speed, save lives

• DANNY Michelson is right in saying that road humps are a crude way of keeping traffic to the speed limit (Pro-hump spin rules, June 20). Road humps are popular with councils because they are cheap and avoid the need for active enforcement, but less so with residents. There are effective alternatives to humps, and the Green Party has campaigned for these to be given more priority in Islington.
But he’s wrong to suggest the benefits of a 20mph speed limit are “academic”. In 20mph zones, deaths and serious injuries fall by 60 per cent. The council’s last report on road safety showed that every pedestrian or cyclist death in Islington was on a street with a 30mph limit. That is why our campaign for a 20mph limit on every residential street continues.
