Loss of a campaigner
• THE death of Michael Marland came as a great shock to me (Tributes to ‘the headteacher with heart’, July 4).
It was only six weeks ago I was at his house in Compton Terrace campaigning to save a tree on his side of Highbury Corner, which was threatened with removal so the road could be widened (at the expense of the pavement) to make things easier for bendy-buses.
Our campaign was successful and the tree has been saved. But, alas, there is now no Michael to help the Islington Society in its campaign to get rid of the bendys.
It is absurd, is it not, to introduce to London, whose roads are congested enough already, an imported vehicle which takes up twice the road space of London’s traditional double-deckers.
