Students’ behaviour sparks Asbo threat

UNRULY City University students so angered neighbours they considered taking out an Asbo, it was revealed this week.
At a licensing hearing at the Town Hall on Tuesday, City University student union bosses outlined plans to open a restaurant on the ground floor of their Northampton Square headquarters in Finsbury.
Angry residents – cataloguing a list of complaints about anti- social behaviour by students – failed to block the licence bid.
Councillors decided the restaurant, called Ten2, could call last orders at 12.30am on Wednesday – its latest night of the week. The union had asked for a 2am closing time.
Residents who opposed the late licence said life in Northampton Square was so bad they had asked a ward councillor about applying for an anti-social behaviour order (Asbo). Gordon Ashworth, who lives two doors away, said he had to put up with vomit and urine in his doorway and his family suffered sleepless nights.
Student union general manager Aidan McDonald assured the licensing panel: “We’re not trying to build a nightclub. This venue is a social space for students. A lot of our students are post-grad and international who don’t like to drink.”
There would be a deli and café on the site, he added.
