Bus drivers’ lost bonus
• I WAS one of the bus drivers on strike last week. I’m never against trying to get more money out of my employer, but there’s more than one way to skin a rabbit and I wonder why the Unite union hasn’t also put Transport for London in its sights?
TfL has an enormous amount of public money at its disposal, which it mostly wastes. Last year, the former mayor gave out £157million to TfL “consultants”. The Oyster card system, so expensively introduced, is not a reliable way to collect fares and constantly throws up aberrant readings. It’s not surprising lots of passengers feel they are short-changed. They are.
TfL used to give drivers a bonus, but about three years ago took it off us so it could slosh the money around to consultants.
The new TfL director is on about £300,000 a year, when the guys who actually do the work are so poorly rewarded by comparison. I wonder why Unite has not lobbied for the restoration to drivers of the TfL bonus? Is it because it’s so much easier to attack the “bosses” and to ignore inflated quangos like TfL for political reasons?
