Give street the hump
• ISLINGTON Council’s recent consultation on the Whittington Park and St George’s area 20mph zone has again failed to take into account the safety of children in Francis Terrace, Archway.
It would appear to be the only street in the entire zone not to be allocated speed humps, despite it being arguably the only street in the zone where children play regularly.
It took months of lobbying previously, and two press articles criticising the council, for the highways department to introduce 20mph signs at the top of Francis Terrace.
This was despite the fact it was regularly drawn to the council’s attention that this is possibly the nearest thing we have to a continental-style play street for young children.
The street is a cul-de-sac off busy Junction Road, and contains a small number of largely family homes. Consequently, there are often up to 10 children who play in the street, aged between two and 12. Given this history, it is inexcusable that the council has again failed to consider these children’s safety.
I urge them to think again, and not just for the safety of my own children and that of their friends, but for all the children and families in the borough. Don’t give me the hump – install one on my street.
