No place for religion
• I WAS interested to see that a new campaign group, Accord, has been established to oppose religious discrimination in our schools and to warn against the dangers of segregating children along sectarian lines.
The Tribune reported earlier this year on some of the almost farcical measures some Islington parents are apparently resorting to in order to meet the religious criteria needed to get their children into faith schools.
Accord wants all state-funded schools to operate admissions policies that take no account of pupils’ – or their parents’ – religious beliefs. It seems to me this would be the most sensible way of ensuring fairness.
Accord is a coalition of religious and secular organisations and anyone who agrees with its worthwhile aims should register their support at www.accord
coalition.org.uk.
