Petition protest over death junction
LONDON mayor Boris Johnson has been urged to improve a blackspot junction at King’s Cross. A Lib Dem petition calls for safety measures at the junction of Penton Rise and Pentonville Road, the scene of a number of accidents, including a fatality.
Cyclist Madeleine Wright was killed at the spot last year. At her inquest the coroner voiced concern that the layout of the junction may have been a contributory factor.
At the junction, westbound cyclists are allowed to continue straight on while motorists are directed to turn left into Penton Rise, across the path of cyclists.
Transport for London (TfL) has studied the junction and pledged to carry out safety improvements later this year.
Lib Dem councillor George Allan, who is a cyclist, said: “The TfL proposals are a big improvement. I’m just very concerned it’s taken them so long to get this far. “I just hope TfL gets the work done on time and there’s no more delays or indeed accidents.”
