Stop health centre sale
• IN case people thought otherwise from Sharon Hayward’s letter about Finsbury Health Centre, the Stop the Sell-Off of the Finsbury Health Centre petition is nothing to do with the Lib Dems or any other political party (An offer we can reject, September 5).
People can sign online at www.gopetition.co.uk/petitions/stop-the-sell-off-of-the-finsbury-health-centre or get in touch with me on 020 7833 1395 for paper copies.
One thing I neglected to mention in my last letter is that there seems to be some confusion within the Primary Care Trust (PCT) about how much refurbishment of the centre would cost, or even whether they’ve decided to sell yet or not.
Last month, Tony Hoolaghan, of the PCT, claimed it is spending £1.5 million a year maintaining the health centre; earlier this year, Rachel Tyndall, chief executive of the PCT, said in a press release that refurbishment would cost £1.5 million, with an extra £200,000 a year on top. Which is it? So far, the PCT has refused to release any detailed figures about anything.
In response to a recent Freedom of Information request, Richard Freeman, head of corporate management, stated that “Islington PCT has not made a decision to sell Finsbury Health Centre” – and, if you look closely at what they’ve said, a “decision” is indeed not mentioned. The “intention” to sell, however, is clear in both PCT minutes and its financial report for this year, to say nothing of its public pronouncements.
Please sign the petition now to put a stop to this nonsense, and save the health centre for future generations.
