Lots to do in holidays
• THIS summer we’ve been able to offer children and young people in Islington more activities than ever before.
Islington Council and its partners put on more than 300 courses and events over the school holidays, many of them free and all of them well subsidised – from fun days in parks to sports training in leisure centres, story-telling in libraries and a range of free Summer University courses for the over-10s.
Play rangers also started working in some of our parks and open spaces this summer, to give children over eight the chance to play outside for free, under trained adult supervision. We’ll be extending that scheme to some of our school playgrounds during evenings and weekends, starting from this term.
Young people said they really valued learning something new from a great teacher, and meeting new friends. For a few they are the start of lifelong interests and potential jobs.
I saw some of the courses in action – hip hop dance at Sadler’s Wells, cheerleading at Finsbury Leisure Centre, helping with animals at Freightliners Farm and a water polo match at Islington Boat Club.
They are done to a high standard and I can thoroughly recommend them. There will be a programme next Easter holidays as well as in the summer.
