Day centre stays open
A POPULAR mental health day care centre in Archway has won a stay of execution. The Ashley Road Day Care Centre – used by about 40 service users with a range of mental illnesses – was due to close, with members moving to a service specifically for the black community in Despard Road, Archway.
But following a public disagreement between leading Lib Dem councillors in July the council has now made a major U-turn by announcing the centre will be refurbished.
Ashley Road will operate as a “satellite service” – open five days a week – alongside the Afro Caribbean Lambo Centre in Despard Road, which is also being refurbished.
During the refurbishment, Lambo users will move to another centre in Isledon Road.
