Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 3 October 2008

Is centre really safe?

USERS of Ashley Road day centre were pleased to learn it has been saved temporarily (Day centre stays open, September 26).
Although Islington Council decided to keep the building open, it still intends to lock many of us out of a place we feel is our home.
At a recent meeting at Hanley Road a council official told us they intend to reduce the staff once building work is completed in 2009. Fewer staff will mean fewer users are allowed in.
That the council wants to call this a “satellite” service makes us wonder what planet they’re on. We may have mental health problems, but we are not so easily fooled. It’s not a satellite service they’re planning, but a skeleton service next year. Councillor Andrew Cornwell stuck his neck out for us because of his conscience. All we ask is that the other Islington councillors give us a written guarantee that the centre will remain open and fully staffed when the headlines have faded.
