Park gallery a delight
• IT was a small but perfectly formed gallery space. Back in June I ran a link on my blog – francsday.blogspot.com/ – saying what a lovely gallery this was, and right in the middle of Finsbury Park.
I am sorry to hear that gallery:space has disappeared. It was delightful, unexpected and a welcome addition to the urban landscape near the lake and the café.
My feeling was that it would add greatly to the general delight of living in cosmopolitan London if there were more “freely available” exhibition and display spaces such as gallery:space was for a short while.
When I visited, there was a mixed-media exhibition on, both photography and paintings. The lighting was up to gallery standard, which really brought out the detail in items on display.
So, I am pleased to have seen it in operation, and sad to hear it has gone. The McKenzie Pavilion in the Park remains in place, but nothing appears to be happening there now.
Does anyone out there know of any non-commercial space, where artists, both established and emerging, can put their work on display?
I am also blogging about the Sobell Centre, which the council has marked down for demolition rather than refurbishment. Perhaps there should be more discussion before the final decision is taken about the future of this much-loved local venue.
