Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 3 October 2008

Children in poverty

TOMORROW (Saturday) there will be a huge rally in Trafalgar Square to demand that the government keeps its promise to end child poverty. The rally is being supported by more than 100 national charities and organisations, and thousands are expected to attend.
When Labour came to power 11 years ago it promised to halve child poverty by 2010 and end it by 2020. In fact, the amount of child poverty in this country, and particularly in London, is now rising. Four out of ten children are living in poverty in one of the richest cities in the world.
The Labour government seems to have forgotten its priorities, and will not do anything without significant and sustained public pressure.
So I hope that as many Islington residents and families as possible will join me and thousands of others on Saturday to hold the government to account. The march will start at 12.30pm from Millbank to Trafalgar Square. The rally in the square will begin at 2pm. Details at www.endchildpoverty. org.uk
