Cyclists’ day in sun
• THANKS to the organisers of London Freewheel for a grand day out. It helped that the sun shone, but for a whole day tens of thousands of Londoners were able to enjoy cycling round our streets and sites as if they actually had a right to be there, as if we were one of the great European cycling cities.
But why can we only do it for one day a year? The car-crazy city of Rome still manages to close its centre to cars every second Sunday of the month, and is now implementing an ambitious programme of permanent closures.
Amsterdam is full of cyclists all year round (they even have multi-storey bike parks) and Dutch families go out cycling together as if it were a normal thing to do, rather than just a once-a-year event.
Come on, Boris, you were there and know what an uplifting feeling it was to be in streets full of cyclists. Let’s make Freewheel a monthly event. Or every weekend?
Or all the time?
