Headteacher suspended
THE headmaster of an Islington junior school where London Mayor Boris Johnson sent his children has been suspended. Jay Henderson, 34, who has been the principal at Canonbury Primary School for nearly four years, has been accused of “unprofessional behaviour.”
Mr Henderson, who won a headteacher award in 2004, has been barred from the school until a full investigation is carried out.
A joint statement from the school’s board of governors and Islington Council said Mr Henderson has been suspended and will not be at school while a thorough independent investigation is carried out.
It added: “The Governors of the school, Islington Council and Cambridge Education @ Islington have requested this formal investigation. “The school will operate as normal under the joint management of the two deputy heads, Lisa Horton and Michelle Bahn. “The detail of the investigation is confidential and we are unable to comment while it is in progress.”
An Ofsted report from 2006 classed the school as “satisfactory” in many areas but concluded that the headmaster was a positive influence.
It said: “The headteacher is providing clear direction and the firm steer that had been missing since the previous inspection.”
