Be warned: that family holiday could be costly
• I WAS both surprised and pleased to see the article about the fine I have received from Islington Council (Little Katie’s £50 fine for a late holiday, October 10).
I received a £50 fine due to my daughter arriving back to school two days late because of a family holiday.
I have been told by the council that headteachers in Islington agreed a policy of fining parents for time off during school time for holidays or family events, unless authorised by the headteacher.
The policy means that if a school says a child has been absent on holiday without authorisation parents are fined.
This means individual schools decide whether or not they give permission for parents to take their children out of school for holidays.
Some schools have decided they will have zero tolerance and never give permission, while others will send out a warning letter.
As a word of warning, the fine is £50 per child (two children £100), and the fine is per parent (so you both get a fine of £50), and if not paid within 28 days it increases to £100 and after that the penalty notice says you will be prosecuted.
