Chamber of horrors
• THIS month I attended a council meeting and was shocked by what I saw. A motion by Councillor James Kempton, seconded by Councillor Terry Stacy, listed various failings of central government, with the proposal to write to the Prime Minister requesting him “to consider his position immediately and ask himself whether he is the best person to help Islington out of its current problems”.
I thought it must be a joke and could not possibly be on a serious council agenda. But no, it was not a joke and in fact this was brought forward on the agenda ahead of issues of real concern such as crime and housing.
Cllr Kempton and his colleagues proceeded to list Gordon Brown’s failings, while the opposition Labour councillors attempted to de-rail the motion, producing as many procedural technicalities as they could as delaying tactics, consuming precious council debating time in the process.
The behaviour of councillors on both sides of the chamber was ludicrous.
The one side sounding as if they were auditioning for the House of Commons and the others reading newspapers and walking around and out of the chamber whenever Cllr Kempton and his colleagues raised another fatuous point on this ridiculous motion.
This was over an hour of Islington taxpayers’ money wasted and a waste of my time to boot.
I invite residents to attend these meetings to see just how their representatives behave in the council chamber, a job residents pay them to do.
