Tribute to war dead
• THIS year, Remembrance Sunday falls on November 9. I should like as many people as possible to join me for the Remembrance Sunday Parade and Inter-Faith Service at the War Memorial on Islington Green.
The parade begins at 10.40am and the two-minutes silence will be observed at 11am. Afterwards, at 11.40am, there will be a short service at the War Memorial on Spa Green.
Since 1921, the Royal British Legion’s mission has been to help members of the serving and ex-service community. Eighty-six years on and the Legion continues to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of those who are serving or who have served in the armed forces.
This year’s Poppy Appeal, which commences tomorrow (Saturday), provides the main source of funds to maintain the Legion’s many welfare and benevolent schemes through which more than 300,000 people are helped each year.
May I urge readers to buy a poppy. If readers do not see anyone selling them, they will be on sale in the Town Hall and at 222 Upper Street.
If anyone can help by being a poppy seller, please contact the Royal British Legion on 0800 085 5924.
