Wastebusters Beth Moseley and Zoe Stanton.
Tipping point: Homes chuck waste habit
THE challenge was to “Watch your Waste” and 80 homes rose to it magnificently. By moving compost and recycling bins inside and buying products with less packaging, they almost halved the amount of waste they produce. They had signed up to Islington Council’s week-long challenge, aimed to show how small changes can make a huge impact.
Householders were given tips on how to reduce waste, and were assigned their own Green Team officer for support.
Newington Green resident Beth Moseley, who took part in the scheme with housemate Zoe Stanton, said: “The challenge was a really good idea and it didn’t take much effort. We made simple changes like bringing our compost and recycling boxes inside so they’re more readily accessible. “We should all take action against how much we’re chucking out and it sounds silly but it makes you feel really good.”
The council’s Lib Dem environment chief, Councillor Greg Foxsmith, said: “A big part of this challenge involved looking at our shopping habits, and avoiding items which have a huge amount of wasteful and unnecessary packaging.”
