Online tribute to the victims of war

ISLINGTON soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in war are being commemorated in an online Book of Remembrance.
From the Boer War to the Blitz, the names of an estimated 4,000 residents killed in conflict are being included in the book – thought to be the first of its kind in Britain – where loved ones can pay their respects.
Lib Dem leader of Islington Council Councillor James Kempton said: “This will be a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives, from all ages and backgrounds.”
Among those who will be included in the Book of Remembrance are:
• Emma Elizabeth Henesy, who at 96 was possibly the oldest victim of the Blitz when her home in Islington Park Street was bombed on October 9, 1940.
• John Bentley, a greaser in the Merchant Navy who died when his ship, the MV Edwy R Brown, was sunk by a U-boat off the coast of Iceland on February 18, 1941.
The Book of Remembrance is expected to be completed early next year. Researchers are keen to talk to people who have photographs, specific details or memories of anyone from Islington who has died in war. Anyone with information can contact project manager John Shepherd at john.shepherd@

More than 1,000 people, including community and religious leaders, are expected to attend this weekend’s Remembrance Sunday interfaith service and parade.
Islington Mayor Councillor Stefan Kasprzyk will join the procession along Upper Street for the service at Islington Green at 10.40am, which will be followed by tributes to war dead at Spa Green, Finsbury, at 11.15am and at the Memorial Arch at Manor Gardens, Holloway, at 2pm.
Cllr Kasprzyk said: “This is the 90th anniversary of Remembrance Day and it shows how important it is that we pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our way of life.
“This is even more poignant in recent times as we see such sad pictures of troops returning from active service abroad.”
