Poster power: Week to beat bullies
YOUNG artists have designed posters for a campaign to help Islington schools to beat the bullies.
Competition winners Sheema Chaudry and Chloe Shannon from William Tyndale Primary School and Jack Martin and Taha Shohib from St Aloysius College beat more than 100 entrants to see their designs displayed across the borough in doctors’ surgeries, youth clubs, libraries, and schools.
The Business Design Centre in Upper Street and Borders bookshop at the Angel are also showing their works.
The theme for this year’s poster design was “being different, belonging together” to coincide with Anti-Bullying Week, which ends today (Friday).
Ursula Woolley, executive member for children and young people, said: “Children bully and are bullied for a whole range of reasons and the consequences can be very harmful and long-lasting.
At Hungerford Primary School, pupils created a “tree” with leaves formed by the shapes of their hands carrying messages about anti-bullying.
Special assemblies were also held.
Anti-bullying co-ordinator Finn Mackay, said: “All schools in Islington have an Anti-Bullying policy and toolkits on how to prevent and respond to bullying when it happens. It’s important to get young people’s input. It’s important to make sure that the victim knows they are never to blame for being bullied.”
