Roaming pupils: Youngsters mark roads revamp with history lesson
LEGIONS of Islington schoolchildren have been taking advantage of a road revamp in Highbury to learn about the borough’s Roman past. Youngsters gathered in Highbury Fields to mark recent street improvements in the area and learn more about the historic meaning of road names.
The work, which cost £1million, is part of the council’s £20m programme for improving 150 streets – the biggest ever investment in the streets of Islington.
Islington Council deputy leader Terry Stacy (pictured) said: “Highbury residents told us that they wanted to see the roads in the area improved. That is why we have invested over £1m in the roads around Highbury Fields. “Broken paving and pothole roads are now a thing of the past on these roads. “At the same time, our young residents are taking the opportunity to look back at some local history from Roman times to the present day, to keep the heritage of our fantastic streets alive.”
The event, entitled Celebrating the History of Islington’s Streets, was sponsored by contractors, Ringway, who carried out the street improvements.
Work was carried out in Baalbec Road, Highbury Crescent, Highbury Place, Corsica Street, Liberia Road and other streets in the area..
