War hero Bayliss to be honoured with plaque
OUTSPOKEN war hero Bill Bayliss – refused official recognition in his 30-year career – is finally being honoured with a plaque at Islington town hall on Wednesday.
Bill, President of the Islington Royal British Legion, died last year aged 90.
The former Labour Islington councillor and deputy leader under Margaret Hodge retired from the Town Hall in 1982 after almost 30 years in public service.
He also worked as a maths teacher at Highbury Grove in the 1980s under the legendary headmaster Sir Rhodes Boyson, who himself went on to become education Minister in the Thatcher government.
But Bill was very much his own man. He was as famous for his arguments with his own colleagues as he was with the opposition.
On top of his famous “hate list” was the war memorial on Islington Green, unveiled two years ago which he described as like a “doughnut”.
