IT WAS a case of old meets new at Camden Passage on Saturday as Elvis, Jaime Winstone and the antiques traders celebrated the annual Christmas lights switch-on.
Actress Jaime, who lives in Islington, was joined by actor boyfriend Alfie Allen, son of writer and comedian Keith and brother of singer Lily, as she helped illuminate the passage.
Islington Mayor Stefan Kasprzyk praised the Georgian feel of Camden Passage and age-old fixture Elvis – window cleaner Vic Joy – was there to celebrate.
Christine Lovett, of Angel BID (Business Improvement District), which splashed out on £4,000 of extra lights, said: “It was great. Jaime said she was a north London girl and she was delighted to be turning on the Christmas lights. She said she loves shopping in Camden Passage and coming to Angel.”
She added: “It was a great contrast between old and new, with the antiques shops and the specialist shops. We spent a lot more money this year, with more lights round the other buildings. Father Christmas came out and Elvis was fantastic, he really livens up the place.
“It was as well-attended as it was last year, despite the bad weather.”
Visitors warmed their hands on mulled wine, feasted on mince pies and donated generously to Islington homeless charity Shelter from the Storm.
