Shop fined £3,000 for sale of unsafe pens
and toy xylophone
A DISCOUNT shop caught selling unsafe pens and a toy containing too high a level of dangerous lead has been landed with a £5,000 bill.
The shop, 99p Stores, in Holloway Road, Holloway, found itself in court after trading standards officials bought toys from the store that were deemed unsafe.
Three sets of Polly Pens were found to constitute a choking hazard as their caps did not allow air flow if swallowed. A toy xylophone had excessive levels of lead and chromium, which could be poisonous if swallowed.
At Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court last month, 99p Stores, of Daventry, Northamptonshire, admitted breaching general product safety regulations and the Toy (Safety) Regulations 1995. The firm was fined £3,350 and ordered to pay £2,105 costs.
Hussein Lalani, commercial director for 99p Stores, said: “This happened across the toy industry around the world last year. We’ve put in place stringent quality-control measures to ensure all our products meet government standards.”
