On target for 1,900 homes
ISLINGTON’S ruling Liberal Democrats have signed up to Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s new housing target – but have asked why non-Tory boroughs are bearing the brunt of his housebuilding plans. Council chiefs have confirmed that Islington will support the 1,902 affordable homes target.
But they warned that Islington could not do it alone in the current economic climate and more financial help was needed from the mayor if he wanted the homes built.
In the past three years, the council claims, more affordable homes have been built in Islington than in its three neighbouring boroughs.
Islington is also one of the first London boroughs since the 1980s to build its own council homes.
