Say hello to a neighbour
• CELEBRATE Your Neighbour Day in Highbury on Saturday, February 7, is a day for neighbours to get connected, have fun and create a buzz in the area.
The idea is simply that in this dynamic and mixed culture there has been sacrificed a sense of connection and belonging. Celebrate Your Neighbour Day is one way to make a difference. For many reasons it has become normal to avoid speaking to those who we live around. This leads to isolation and the increased fragmentation of communities which, it can be argued, has much to do with misunderstanding and fear.
If nothing is done to positively impact this situation then things may well deteriorate further, but if each of us makes a small investment of friendliness something new and exciting could be created. All you have to do to participate is to introduce yourself to just one neighbour you have not previously spoken to. If enough people play the game the whole area should be alive with conversations.
Business and local organisations will be encouraged to offer special deals and put on events in support of the day. For anyone who wants to be part of the team, put on their own event for the community or just wishes to find out more, there is a meeting at 6.30pm on Tuesday at The Hall, St Joan of Arc, 60 Highbury Park.
