Bikers, blue means go
• BIKERS beware! As you probably know, Transport for London (TfL) has launched an 18-month trial allowing motorcycles in red route bus lanes.
To avoid a nasty surprise ticket through the post, please note that this does not mean all bus lanes. TfL controls red routes. These are main roads with red lines painted at the side of them. Examples here in Islington are Upper Street and Holloway Road. Motorbikes, mopeds, scooters and tricycles – all without sidecars – are now allowed in these bus lanes at all times.
But, during bus lane operation hours, they are not allowed in non-TfL roads which have a yellow line at the side instead, such as Essex Road, Caledonian Road and Balls Pond Road.
The bottom line: if the blue sign at the edge of the bus lane has a motorbike symbol in it, you can ride there. If it doesn’t, you can’t while the bus lane is in operation. We don’t want anyone to get caught out. So if you’re in any doubt, keep your eyes on the blue signs – and, of course, on the road!
