Almunia’s goal in Spanish class
HE may be good but when it came to catching a ball from Rotherfield Primary schoolchildren, Arsenal’s goalkeeper Manuel Almunia needed his wits about him.
The Spaniard took a group of youngsters for some goalkeeping practice during a visit to the Canonbury school last week and had to work hard to stop them scoring.
The pupils welcomed the goalkeeper into their classroom to practise their Spanish language and soccer skills.
The Arsenal Double Club, an innovative programme which was founded in 1998, a “double” winning season for the Gunners, uses Arsenal resources, first team players and football-based classroom exercises to make learning fun.
After the session Manuel said: “It’s great to meet these children today and help them with their lesson. “They are so young that they have a lot of time to learn the language which is key. I wish I had been involved in a scheme like this at primary school to help me with my English. “Learning a language at such a young age is very valuable.”
