Making a difference for the cost of bird seed!

COLD little birds have been given a helping hand to survive through the winter months with home-made bird-feeders loaded with lard.
Bird-lovers flocked to Elthorne Park, Archway, on Saturday to help make feeders from logs and load them with a muesli mix – all stuck together with vegetable lard.
North area park ranger Fiona Mackenzie said: “It’s been a tough time of year for smaller birds because it was so cold. In the morning it was bucketing down with rain but then the sun came out and it was on our side.”
She added: “We made about 12-15 bird-feeders. Most people took theirs with them and we hung some up on the trees in the park and we’ve noticed birds have already begun to feed off them. The youngest person to make one was two and a half years old and his grandmother made one too.
“These are the kind of things you can make for your own back garden.”
Islington’s park rangers are running an art day at Barnard Park tomorrow (Saturday), where there will be another chance to vote for your favourite park in the borough.
