Recession a life-saver?
• EVEN a cloud as black as the coming depression could well have a life-saving silver lining. Soon we’ll be queuing up at soup kitchens and rationing will come back in. We won’t be able to import most of what we need and it will be as if we are at war as every nation scrambles for the most basic resources.
This is the silver lining: for without the oxygen of big business – credit – capital projects such as Trident renewal, new nuclear power stations, two new aircraft carriers and several other madnesses (the list, sadly, is almost endless) will be, hopefully, put on the eternal back-burner.
This economic war could, therefore, cause a military peace to break out all around the world and the crazy rush by big business, endemic since the 17th century, to destroy our environment could be halted. This could be the war to end all wars, including that terrible war humans have been in with the environment.
People in hundreds of years to come – if there are any – will find it hard to believe there was a time when the United States alone possessed enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world several times, while billions of people lacked the basic necessities of life.
