Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 30 January 2009

Cleared for catastrophe

• GORDON Brown’s decision to push ahead with the proposed third runway at Heathrow marks a new low-point in his term as Prime Minister.
Claims that the third runway would bring in billions to the economy every year have been disputed from a number of sources. The only people who stand to benefit are BAA and the aviation industry, who are looking to boost their short-term profit margins at the expense of everyone’s long-term climate stability.
Thankfully, there are many groups committed to making sure the runway doesn’t happen. Groups like the Camp for Climate Action, Plane Stupid, Greenpeace and the residents of Sipson, near Heathrow, will be taking non-violent direct action to throw a big spanner in the works of the runway construction.
Anyone who has ever lain awake and worried about how their children will deal with the effects of runaway climate change should look these groups up and get involved in preventing this social and ecological catastrophe from unfolding.
