Sit down, have a cuppa... and get to know your neighbour
Pubs, cafés and churches offer warm welcome as community draws closer
THE solid citizens of Highbury will “celebrate their neighbours” tomorrow (Saturday) in the first of a planned series of events to help people cope with the recession.
Dozens of events are taking place, involving individuals, voluntary organisations, churches and North London Central (formerly Finsbury Park) Mosque.
To help create community spirit, pubs, cafés and shops will be offering food and drink, often free or at reduced prices, for the day.
At the same time residents are being asked to look out for the lonely, the elderly or disabled people who may be stuck at home.
Katherine Wratten, a psychology student, is behind a project which she hopes will bring people together. “The aim is to get people to appreciate each other and the area and also support our wonderful small shops and businesses, which are the bedrock of our community,” she said. “We want to show what Highbury has to offer.
“But it will also be an opportunity for people to get to know their neighbours, possibly for the first time.”
From book swap to pets day
AMONG those taking part are:
Highbury Barn pub, Highbury Park: free coffee and cake morning from 9am-noon.l The
Clock Café, 73 Highbury Park: book swap – bring along your old books and swap them with your neighbours.
Barnaby’s Hair Salon, Highbury Park: half price for introducing a friend or neighbour to the salon.
Islington libraries: Central Library, 2 Fieldway Crescent, and N4 Library, 26 Blackstock Road, offering free CD loans from 9.30am to 5pm.
Christchurch,155 Highbury Grove: open morning from 10am to noon. Visit this historic building and meet people over tea and cake.
North London Central Mosque, 7-11 St Thomas Road: exhibitions, free literature about Islam, mosque tours, documentaries, discussions and children’s workshops.
C4 Charity Bookshop, 174 Blackstock Road: community pets day. The shop will be displaying stories and pictures of pets as well as giving away treats for cats and dogs. Come down to meet your animal-loving neighbours and their pets.
Lois Farouk clothing, accessories and gift shop, 113 Highbury Park: enjoy Egyptian treats and a glass of mint tea. There’s 25 per cent off all stock.
Gunners pub, Blackstock Road: a pool tournament from 4pm. First prize a new cue. Thirty places, first come, first served. Free entry, free buffet.
St John’s Primary School, Conewood Street, Highbury Vale: bric-a-brac sale, 2pm to 4pm. Entrance 50p.
Gourmet Station Café, 1A Highbury Park: fresh, delicious and healthy food with a 20 per cent discount all day.
