Nightclub bid angers neighbours
OBJECTORS who fear disturbance by rowdy revellers are to oppose moves to turn a Farringdon bar and restaurant into a 24-hour nightclub. Letters objecting to the proposal for the Printworks bar will be presented when the bid for nightclub status is made at a licensing committee meeting on Monday.
Objectors, who include Clerkenwell Tenants Association, claim that the former Wetherspoon pub in Farringdon Road will be unable to control the arrival and departure of clubbers without causing serious disruption to nearby homes.
One opponent writes: “There is no area in which clubbers can queue, or even stand outside waiting for taxis, or meet friends without causing serious noise disturbance to residential premises.”
The objector warns that there were fights and disturbances under a previous management and adds: “I have long experience of participants in such disputes crossing Farringdon Road to argue and fight outside my windows in Farringdon Lane.”
Islington Council’s noise team, which dealt with complaints about the bar when it was under a previous management, is insisting that the club, to be called Ghost, provides prominent notices at all exits asking customers to leave quietly.
Aiden Fitzsimons, of Clerkenwell Tenants Association, said that the application, if approved, could lead to public nuisance and crime. He added: “A playground on our estate could offer a place to sleep it off and a toilet facility. This has happened before.”
Police are not objecting to the application, provided the club provides CCTV inside and outside.
