St Jude’s Church, which was attacked last month
Vicar’s fears that church is being targeted following second attack
A NEW vicar to St Jude’s in Mildmay who has been hit by thieves for the second time in as many weeks fears he may be being deliberately targeted. In the latest incident a Vauxhall hatchback parked in the front drive of the vicarage was broken into on Sunday afternoon.
Thieves broke open the boot of the vehicle and stole a bag containing personal belongings including credit cards.
Last month vandals trashed St Jude’s Church, smashing a stained glass window, ripping the chalice and service linen from the altar, emptying cupboards and ripping up books. Police fear it was a “malicious” attack.
After that incident Father Akinwale Omoyajowo said he would say a prayer for the thieves. This time he was not in such a charitable mood. “This time thieves stole a bag, a winter jacket and a loaf of bread,” said Father Justus. “What made it worse was that this was the middle of the afternoon in broad daylight while we were inside the vicarage. “It was so audacious and in your face. It’s quite worrying really. “We lived in the West Midlands for six years and although it was a very tough area there was never any crime against our church.”
He added:“I’m not leaving and I’m not intimidated because of these incidents. But I can’t help wondering whether someone doesn’t want us to be here. “After the church was attacked police suspected it was malicious because it was mainly damage. I didn’t think so. But now I’m asking myself if maybe it’s true.”
