Youth has its place
• I WOULD like to congratulate Islington’s young people and the council’s children’s services team who have secured £3.5million of government funding to build a new youth centre in Finsbury Park.
Thanks to the hard work they put in to developing a bid for the My Place scheme, we’ll be able to build a centre for young people at the old Hornsey Road Baths site.
Finsbury Park is one of the most deprived areas in the borough so this money is welcome and will give young people access to the kind of first-class facilities they deserve.
We’re investing a lot of money in improving youth services across the borough, with plans for a £750,000 refurbishment of the White Lion Centre, in Barnsbury, and the development of a youth centre in the area around Archway.
Islington Council regularly consults with young people to find out what type of youth services they’d like to see, and encourages them to take an active role in helping to decide how youth funding is spent.
The enthusiasm of the young people involved in this bid was inspiring to see and I hope they’ll continue to be involved in making key decisions as the development of the centre takes place.
