Accident outside pub leaves woman fighting for her life

A WOMAN is fighting for her life after being struck by a van in Essex Road on Sunday.
Pub-goers rushed out of The Orwell pub, which overlooked the scene of the accident, after hearing the screeching of tyres in the street outside.
The 52-year-old woman was said to be in a critical condition at an east London hospital following the accident, which happened at about midnight at the junction with Mitchison Road.
Police say she had been attempting to cross the road but not at a designated crossing.
George Stupart, manager of The Orwell pub, on the corner of Essex Road and Mitchison Road, said: “It was quite traumatic. We had a party at our place when all of a sudden we heard the screeching of tyres.
“Everyone came out front. This poor girl was face down. She had blonde hair and was quite petite.
“We got everyone to go back into the pub. There was a doctor there. He came out from somewhere and checked her vitals.
“It was crazy, horrible. You get shook up, call the people you love to make sure they’re OK and get on with your life.”
He added: “About two or three weeks ago a bike got hit by a bus here. The guy from the [local] kebab shop said he’s seen about 10 accidents over the last three years.”
Mini cab driver Mehmet Peker, 41, said: “I’d had a drink after work and was outside on the street when I heard a car braking. I ran there and saw a lady on the floor face down.
“There were about 20-30 people around. A doctor checked she was still breathing but he said she was losing blood. Someone called 999 and an ambulance arrived within minutes.”
He added: “Road accidents don’t happen very often here.
“I’ve worked here four or five months and it’s the first accident for me. The police cut off the road both ways. It lasted at least two or three hours.”
An Islington Police spokeswoman said: “The woman was attempting to cross the road, not at a designated crossing point, when she was in collision with a Ford Transit van.
“London Ambulance Service attended and the woman was taken to an east London hospital where she remains in a critical condition.
“Next of kin have been informed. The driver stopped at the scene.”
