From Gaza with hope
• ISLINGTON Friends of Yibna were delighted with the unanimous Islington Council decision allowing us to hold a town hall exhibition showing our achievements in the stricken refugee camp in Gaza. There will be lots to see at the exhibition on the humanitarian work that IFY and the people of Islington have achieved in bringing friendship to the people of Yibna.
So we were delighted when an IFY member, Malaika, a former London Met student living in Islington, travelled though Egypt with donations of colouring kits for kids, sports shoes for women and children and football boots for the Yibna teams. However, the Viva Palestina convoy was only allowed to bring medical aid through the Rafah crossing into Gaza. Our donations of nappies and sanitary towels were allowed through, but not children’s colouring books or sports shoes.
Not only do we still not know whether Israel has allowed the aid to pass into Gaza, but we were shocked that Israel not only has destroyed our friends’ homes, with them living hand-to-mouth, but that essential humanitarian aid is still not allowed through in sufficient quantities.
We still hope paintings by the children in Yibna will feature at the town hall exhibition and provide not just a unique insight into the terror they experienced during the Israeli bombardment but show what hope they have for their future.
