Musician leaped to his death from flat
A MUSICIAN died after jumping through the window of his mother’s flat on Christmas Day, an inquest has heard.
Nicholas Charambolous, 46, plunged three floors from the top floor of a building on an estate in City Road at 12.30am.
An inquest into the death at St Pancras Coroner’s Court on Tuesday heard that Mr Charambolous – who had been sectioned 10 times by Islington mental health services – had pleaded to return to the Highgate Day Centre in the week before his death.
His senior social worker Tony Couch, based at Drayton Community Care Centre, said: “Nicholas was discharged on December 18. His mother called me on December 22 and said he was not well. We thought he was talking up his symptoms to engineer an admission over Christmas. When I saw him on December 24, he seemed agitated and a bit emotional. I did not consider him at risk of self harm.”
The court heard that Mr Charambolous had a long history of “impulsive suicide attempts”.
Beds were available at the Highgate Day Centre and his mental health team agreed on December 24 he could return to Opal ward on an informal basis. But Mr Charambolous failed to attend an appointment at the Whittington Hospital.
Recording a verdict of suicide, coroner Dr Andrew Reid said: “I am satisfied that he died from multiple injuries and that he jumped or allowed himself to fall. It was done with intent and in connection, but not because of, his chronic illness.” |
