Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Unsporting wardens fine drivers forced onto street

• AS Thames Water’s re-laying of its Victorian water pipes in Barnsbury has slowly progressed (if that’s the right word), confusion was probably at its most complete last weekend where Thornhill Road is narrowest, round Ripplevale Grove.
On Friday, the usual one-line traffic and temporary lights gave way to total closure and Albion Mews was totally cut off from south, west and north. I know, I tried them all.
Once my bitter complaint, “But I live here”, was understood, the whole party of workmen seemed to rally round the area under siege both to admit and then to extricate me.
Mobile cranes were moved, barriers opened up, a trench opening directly outside the Mews which suddenly appeared on Saturday morning was magically decked over, and my car and I were guided through to a chorus of “no problem”.
By Sunday, the crisis was virtually over. Further up Thornhill Road they seemed to have been less lucky. I heard that those who temporarily couldn’t park in their gardens had to park in the street – and got parking tickets.
How unsporting can wardens be? So bravo, Thames Water, and boo to the wardens.
